When we think about fragrances, the first thing that comes to mind is luxurious and beautifully designed bottles. However, these are modern types of perfume that focus more on appearance, but they lack the richness and authenticity of age-old attars. The word "Attar" originates from the Persian word "itir," meaning fragrance, scent, or essence. In India, attars have been crafted for thousands of years using natural ingredients, such as aromatic oils, spices, and flowers, through traditional methods. These fragrances were once used by royal societies, including kings and queens.
One of the most renowned places for attar production in India is Kannauj, often called the “Perfume Capital of India.” They are known for their heritage and craftsmanship. Inspired by this legacy, we introduced our luxurious Indian-origin brand, known as DJANAÉ. But what exactly is DJANAÉ attar? What makes it unique? And how does it carry forward this rich tradition? Let’s explore in detail.
The Legacy of Kannauj in India
Kannauj city is a small town in Uttar Pradesh, known for its richness, purity, and long-lasting fragrance. It is also known as the “Perfume Capital of India" and “ittar nagri” that has more than 500 distillation units where traditional attars are manufactured. For centuries, artisans in Kannauj have followed the traditional Deg-Bhapka method, using natural raw materials to craft authentic fragrances. These attars were not only used by royalty but also played an important role in spiritual rituals. Here, fragrance was not worn; it was experienced. This deep-rooted philosophy is what inspires the essence of D’JANAÉ.
What is D’JANAÉ, and what is its mission and vision?
The word D’JANAÉ is inspired by the French word “Janae”, which means “Divine Essence or god’s gracious gift”. Founded by Divita Juneja, the brand aims to bring the royal traditions into modern lifestyles. D’JANAÉ connects generations from the young to the elderly by blending heritage with contemporary elegance.

Crafted with Tradition: The Art Behind Every Drop

D’JANAÉ attars are crafted using the ancient Deg-Bhapka method, also known as hydro-distillation. The process includes:
a. The Deg (copper vessel) that is used to hold 10 kg to 160 kg, is filled with water and natural materials such as flowers, herbs, or roots. It is sealed with cotton and clay to prevent steam leakage.
b. The vessel is heated using wood and cow-dung cakes through a traditional furnace (Bhatti), and the fragrant steam travels through a bamboo pipe (Chonga) into the receiver (Bhapka).
c. The Bhapka is kept cool by regularly changing the water in the Gachchi, a cooling tank.
d. The oil and water are then separated, and the process is repeated until the desired concentration is achieved.
e. In the last, the attar is stored in a leather container (Kuppi) for maturation and to enhance its richness.
More Than a Fragrance- A Personal Experience
D’JANAÉ attars go beyond fragrance; they create an experience. The collection includes D’JANAÉ Shringar Attar, D’JANAÉ Shanti Attar, D’JANAÉ Oud-Al-Malik Attar, and D’JANAÉ Oud-Al-Malika Attar.
